Parkinsonism induced by a monoamine oxidase inhibitor.
A parkinsonian syndrome developed 5 weeks after administration of phenelzine in a 42 year old woman with major depressive illness. Discontinuation of this agent resulted in gradual disappearance of the extrapyramidal syndrome. Possible underlying mechanisms for this unusual case are discussed.
متن کاملMonoamine Oxidase Inhibitors and Their Role in Depression
The role of the monoamines, serotonin in mental illnesses including depression is well recognized. All antidepressant drugs in clinical use increase acutely the availability of these monoamines at the synapse either by inhibiting their neuronal reuptake, inhibiting their intraneuronal metabolism, or increasing their release by blocking the α2 autoand heteroreceptors on the monoaminergic neuron....
متن کاملFA-70, a novel selective and irreversible monoamine oxidase-A inhibitor: effect on monoamine metabolism in mouse cerebral cortex.
A series of indolealkylamine derivatives has been previously designed and evaluated with the aim of finding the most potent and selective novel monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors to be used in the therapy of neurological and affective disorders. Among them, FA70, a 5-hydroxy-indolealkylamine derivative, has been characterized in vitro as a potent, irreversible, and mechanism-based inhibitor of ...
متن کاملEffect of Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor on Developmental Mechanism in the Amphibian.
大鹿 英世 ・中井 健五 Accumulating evidence indicates that monoamine oxidase (MAO, 1.4.3.4) is essential to the metabolism of serotonin and catecholamines. Since these amines are substances of high biological activity and have been implicated in autonomic function, it becomes of great interest to see whether foetal or embryonic development is closely related to the metabolism of these biogenic amines. T...
متن کاملThe Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor Isocarboxazid is a Relevant Treatment Option in Treatment-Resistant Depression-Experience-Based Strategies in Danish Psychiatry
Isocarboxazid is the only one of the classical monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), which is marketed in Denmark. In 1980 a paper on long-term treatment of depression with isocarboxazid suggested that treatment with monoamine oxidase inhibitors like isocarboxazid should not be left untried in the case of therapy-resistant depression [1]. This is in accordance with the registered indication of ...
